Boys' Latin has a quickly growing robotics program. The upper school Robotics Team was established in 2007 and participates annually in the fiercly competitive FIRST FRC league. FIRST Robotics, considered The Varsity Sport of the Mind, was founded by inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway and many other robotic masterpieces. The program inspires young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor‐based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well‐rounded life capabilities including self‐confidence, communication, and leadership. The team has competed annually in multiple FIRST Regional Competitions, including the Washington D.C., Chesapeake and Pittsburgh regionals. In 2009, the team placed as a finalist in the Pittsburgh regional. In 2010, the team emerged as the Champions of the Chesapeake Regional, thereby qualifying and later participating in the FIRST World Championship in Atlanta, GA.
The lower and middle schools each have Robotics Clubs to support the growing student interest in robotics engineering. Plans are underway to expand the FIRST program into the Middle School by establishing a FIRST FLL team and preparing for competitions in the Fall 2010.
Plans are also underway to create a state-of-the-art Robotics Prototype Lab for the lower, middle and upper school robotics teams to meet, design, build and test their robots.
