Financial Aid
Letter Regarding Financial Aid for 2010-2011
Online Application
(The Boys' Latin School code is 1786)
Boys’ Latin School’s Financial Aid Policy is administered by a Financial Aid Committee and is consistent with the guidelines established by the Association of Independent Maryland Schools (AIMS) and School and Student Services (SSS) by NAIS (the National Association of Independent Schools). The basic premise of these guidelines is that parents have an obligation to finance their son’s education to the extent that they are able. However, the financial aid program enables Boys’ Latin to enroll students who might not otherwise have access to an independent school education because of limited financial resources.
Boys’ Latin is committed to being a diverse and inclusive community reflecting a broad economic mix. Our financial aid funds are used to enable students to attend despite financial obstacles.
Applying for financial aid will not affect an applicant’s chances for admission. All materials submitted for financial aid are kept strictly confidential. Admissions decisions and financial aid decisions are rendered by separate committees of the school.
Financial Aid
Financial Aid represents the vast majority of more than one million dollars available annually for financial assistance. Financial Aid Grants are based on documented need determined by a family’s financial profile and ability to pay. All applicants interested in being considered for financial aid must apply through SSS by NAIS by submitting a Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) and other documents to both SSS and Boys’ Latin. The PFS can be completed and submitted on-line at www.sss.nais.org or by mail. Parents should retain a copy of the PFS for their own records as well.
Named Scholarship Program
Most of the 55 Upper School Students selected as Named Scholars are recipients of need-based financial aid, but with the additional distinction of being associated with one of our sponsors, long time supporters and friends of Boys’ Latin. Some Named Scholarships are merit based. All Named Scholars must also apply for financial assistance through SSS by NAIS by submitting the Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) and other documents to SSS, and provide copies to Boys’ Latin.
The Williams Scholars Program
The Williams Scholars Program is offered to all Upper School students whose records are indicative of a commitment to academic achievement and a willingness to participate in all aspects of school life. Those who participate in the program may qualify for and enjoy additional benefits by maintaining that high standard of academic achievement.
Named Scholars and Williams Scholars are selected from students entering grades 9-12, including new applicants to Boys’ Latin as well as re-enrolling students.

On or before April 15

* A PFS cover sheet is needed to accompany tax returns, and can be printed from the website for families at www.sss.nais.org. Select “Enter now,” then “Access the PFS,” and using the drop down menu under “Resources,” the PFS cover sheet can be found in “Forms to view/download.”
We strongly encourage families to file early and submit tax returns ahead of schedule.
If you plan to file your taxes late with the IRS, please send a copy of your signed extension form to Boys’ Latin.
There are no longer forms specifically for parents who are divorced. Divorced parents unable to combine their information on a single Parent Financial Statement should request an additional PFS form from us. In these cases, we require only one PFS to be sent to SSS and that should be the principle custodial parent or the parent who is financially responsible for tuition. The other parent should send their PFS directly to Boys’ Latin. In cases of divorce, both parents must submit tax returns to SSS.
“My favorite reason for teaching here is the students. We have a great group of boys. I also enjoy the flexibility I have in creating and implementing my curriculum, while maintaining National Standards.” Elizabeth Wilson, Lower School teacher
Financial Aid Q&A
Q. How are financial aid grants determined?
A. Financial aid is available for students in grades K – 12. Financial aid grants are based on documented need. The Report of Family Contribution-Student Report returned to us from SSS is an analysis of your financial need and your ability to contribute to your son’s tuition. The Financial Aid Committee uses this report as a guideline in determining awards.
As demand exceeds our financial aid budget, not everyone who applies and qualifies for aid will receive it.
Q. If we completed a parents’ financial statement last year, must we complete it again?
A. Yes. You must submit a PFS every year to SSS by NAIS in order to be considered for the renewal of financial aid or any type of scholarship. Once a student receives aid, every effort is made to continue assistance as long as the family continues to demonstrate financial need.
Q. If we are applying to more than one school, do we need to complete a PFS for each institution?
A. No, completing one PFS will suffice. However, you must list Boys’ Latin on the PFS as a school to receive the report of Family Contribution-School Report. (Boys’ Latin’s School Code Number is 1786.)
Q. Do we need to make application again for a son if we already completed a PFS for a sibling?
A. No, not if you included that sibling in Part B of the Parent Financial Statement. If not, you’ll need to go on-line at www.sss.nais.org and revise your PFS to include that sibling in part B. You will likely also need to make a change to item #19 in part E (the number of children who will be attending tuition charging schools). Regardless of whether you completed the PFS on-line or by mail, you can revise your PFS on-line using the e-mail address you listed on the PFS as your user name and the password SSS assigned to you. If you need help you can contact the SSS Helpline at 800 344-8328. You should also notify all of the schools involved of the changes you are making. You must also send us a COPY of the original PFS as well as the appropriate IRS tax forms.
Q. In the case of divorce, does each parent file a separate PFS form?
A. Yes, in most cases. Divorced parents unable to combine their information on a single Parent Financial Statement should request an additional PFS from us. In these cases we require only one PFS be sent to SSS. The form sent to SSS should be the principle custodial parent or the parent who is financially responsible for tuition. The other parent should send their PFS directly to Boys’ Latin. If either parent has remarried, Boys’ Latin will consider the financial circumstances of the new family unit, always bearing in mind the obligation of a step-parent to his or her natural children. Boys’ Latin cannot be bound by the assertion that one parent has disclaimed responsibility for his/her son’s education.
Q. When will we be notified?
A. You will receive written notification from the Financial Aid Committee by no later than mid- March. Your enrollment contract must be returned to Boys’ Latin by April 1. Failure to return the enrollment contract and deposit by this deadline could result in the forfeiture of your son’s grant and/or class space.
