(The Boys' Latin School code is 1786)
The Boys’ Latin School’s Financial Aid Policy is established by the Board of Trustees and administered by a Financial Aid Committee. It is consistent with the guidelines established by the Association of Independent Maryland Schools (AIMS) and School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS). The basic premise of these guidelines is that parents have an obligation to finance their son’s education to the extent that they are able. However, the financial aid program enables Boys’ Latin to enroll students who might not otherwise have access to an independent school education because of limited financial resources.
Boys’ Latin is committed to being a diverse and inclusive community reflecting a broad economic mix. Our financial aid funds are used to enable students to attend despite financial obstacles.
Applying for financial aid will not affect an applicant’s chances for admission. All materials submitted for financial aid are kept strictly confidential. Decision on admissions and financial aid are rendered by separate committees of the school.
Need-Based Financial Aid represents the vast majority of the over one million dollars available annually for financial assistance. Financial assistance comes in three forms:
Need-Based Financial Aid Grants
Need-Based Financial Aid Grants are based on documented need, determined by a family’s financial profile and ability to pay. A signed copy of the most current Federal Tax Return, including W2s, itemized deductions and all schedules must be submitted to the school. A Parents Financial Statement (PFS) must be completed and forwarded to School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS) in Princeton, New Jersey for analysis. Additionally, a copy of the completed PFS must be forwarded to Boys’ Latin. This is most important as a fail safe to something getting lost in the mail. An additional copy, for one’s own records, should be made as well.
Named Scholarship Program
Most of the 35 Upper School Students selected as Named Scholars are part of our need-based financial aid, but with the additional distinction of being associated with one of our sponsors, long time supporters and friends of Boys’ Latin. Some Named Scholarships are merit based. Named Scholars must also complete and return the PFS and submit a copy of the Federal Tax Return in order to be considered.
The Williams Scholars Program
The Williams Scholars Program is offered to Upper School students whose records are indicative of a commitment to academic achievement and a willingness to participate in all aspects of school life. Those who participate in the program may qualify for and enjoy additional benefits by maintaining that high standard of academic achievement.
Named Scholars and Williams Scholars are selected from students entering grades 9-12, including new applicants to Boys’ Latin as well as re-enrolling students.
Financial Aid Timetable:
Complete a Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) by January 15. Make and send a COPY of your completed PFS to the Admissions Office. (This can be done on the internet at www.nais.org, but please make a copy for your records and send a copy to the Admissions Office.)
Send the original to School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS) in Princeton, New Jersey, with the appropriate fee. It is also recommended that you request your own analysis, called a “Family Report” for an additional fee.
Non-custodial parents must also complete a PFS and return it directly to the Admissions Office. If applicable, please call the Admissions Office to request the form.
Self-employed or business owners must also complete the Business/Farm Statement and return it to the Admissions Office.
Send a COPY of your current federal tax return with all schedules and W-2s to the Admissions Office no later than April 15.
New applicant families must also send their previous year’s federal tax return with all schedules and W-2s to the Admissions Office by January 15.
“My favorite reason for teaching here is the students. We have a great group of boys. I also enjoy the flexibility I have in creating and implementing my curriculum, while maintaining National Standards.” Elizabeth Wilson, Lower School teacher
Financial Aid Q&A
Q. How are financial aid grants determined?
A. Financial aid is available for students in grades 5– 12. All financial aid grants are based on documented need. The Report of Family Contribution-Student Report returned to us from SSS is an analysis of your financial need and your ability to contribute to your son’s tuition. The Financial Aid Committee uses this report as a guideline in determining awards.
As demand exceeds our financial aid budget, not everyone who applies and qualifies for aid will receive it.
Q. If we completed a parents’ financial statement last year, must we complete it again?
A. Yes. You must submit a PFS every year to be considered for the renewal of financial aid or any type of scholarship. Once a student receives aid, every effort is made to continue assistance as long as the family continues to demonstrate financial need.
Q. If we are applying to more than one school, do we need to complete a PFS for each institution?
A. No, completing one PFS will suffice. However, you must list Boys’ Latin on the PFS as a school to receive the report of Family Contribution-School Report. (Boys’ Latin’s School Code Number is 1786.)
Q. Do we need to make application again for my son if we already completed a PFS for a sibling?
A. No, not if you included that sibling in Part 1 of the Parent Financial Statement. If not, you must send us a COPY of the original PFS as well as the appropriate IRS tax forms.
Q. In the case of divorce, does each parent file a separate PFS form?
A. Yes, in most cases. Divorced parents unable to combine their information on a single Parent Financial Statement should request an additional PFS from us. In these cases we require only one PFS be sent to School and Student Service for Financial Aid. The form sent to SSS should be the principle custodial parent or the parent who is financially responsible for tuition. The other parent should send their PFS directly to Boys’ Latin. If either parent has remarried, Boys’ Latin will consider the financial circumstances of the new family unit, always bearing in mind the obligation of a stepparent to his or her natural children. Boys’ Latin cannot be bound by the assertion that one parent has disclaimed responsibility for his/her son’s education.
Q. When will we be notified?
A. You will receive written notification from the Financial Aid Committee by the middle of March. Your enrollment contract must be returned to Boys’ Latin by April 1. Failure to return the enrollment contract and deposit by this deadline could result in the forfeiture of your son’s grant and/or class space.
