Athletics Overview
Boys’ Latin athletics are woven into the fabric of this school. Current student-athletes, alumni, parents, and friends of Boys’ Latin take great pride in the athletic program at Boys’ Latin. Whether following our nationally renowned and respected lacrosse teams, or our championship caliber football and soccer programs, Boys’ Latin is the little David facing the MIAA’s (Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association) Goliaths.
Since 1964, the athletics program has grown to include 21 teams in 12 interscholastic sports and, at the Middle School level, 18 teams in 9 sports. From Kindergarten through 12th Grade the student-athlete is continually learning and evolving. The athletic program teaches the whole boy—not just the athlete inside. General physical fitness and sportsmanship are valued equally with skill work.
In the Lower School, athletics are part of the daily schedule. Boys are exposed to a wide variety of sports and athletic play. Recreation League play may mean that a student who plays soccer never gets the opportunity to play football. In athletics, he will get that chance. Group dynamics, sportsmanship and skills are stressed.
In the Middle School, athletics continue to be offered daily. The athletic curriculum continues to be wide and varied, stressing skill development, game sense and sportsmanship. For the first time, the students have the opportunity to put on a Laker uniform and represent the School through athletic competition.
Over 89% of Upper School students participate on one or more interscholastic teams. Boys’ Latin teams are known for their hard play and sportsman-like conduct. The coaches and athletic department administrators encourage multi-sport participation. Many student-athletes play two or three sports during the course of the year.
Program Philosophy
The general philosophy of the BL Athletic Department is aimed at developing the highest standards of sportsmanship, while achieving the maximum amount of student participation and the highest level of competition. More specifically we encourage all of our student athletes to give maximum effort, not be afraid of making a mistake, and strive to learn. We want them to develop a healthy attitude towards competition and, most importantly, to have fun.
“Athletics is an integral part of the school experience and another opportunity to teach manners and develop character.” Ritchie Schell, Football Coach
