Boys’ Latin’s Upper School includes Grades 9-12 and occupies the north side of the 41-acre Lake Avenue campus. Home to approximately 270 young men, the Upper School is the largest of the three divisions, yet small compared to other area independent high schools. The division’s size creates a community atmosphere, which gives our students an environment where they feel confident in stretching themselves academically, athletically, and creatively. The Upper School embodies the intangible, yet palpable, feeling of the entire Boys’ Latin community where the school is a home-away-from home for our students.
Without a doubt, the primary focus of the Upper School is to nurture, challenge, and develop each Laker so that he is prepared, competitive, and confident to assume the role of a college student. Together, the Upper School administration and faculty deliver first rate curricular, co-curricular, fine arts, and advisory programs to support each boy, every day as he grows and matures. Our signature is our dedication to helping each of these students maximize potential, conquer challenges, and identify areas of strong interest or low capability. The faculty are highly competent in their areas of expertise, yet see themselves first and foremost as teachers of students, rather than teachers of subjects.
Boys enter the upper school, departing four years later with a clear sense of self-identity, self-respect, and self-confidence. They mature in memorable and notable ways, confident that they do so with the unquestionable support of their peers, the faculty, and the administration. In addition to high academic standards and expectations, the Boys’ Latin Upper School has high expectations for each boy’s character, integrity, honor, and sense of respect for others. It is an environment in which each and every student is valued for his unique contributions and capabilities, in a genuine and deliberately caring manner. It is a principled environment in which our school motto, Esse Quam Videri, “to be, rather than to seem,” is experienced and becomes an honored tradition.
