On October 16, 2006, The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland inducted its first fifty-seven members into The Williams Scholars Program. Named for Mr. Jack Williams, headmaster from 1962 until 1978, the program is the result of the vision of Dr. H. Mebane Turner, the school’s current headmaster. Many members of our community recognize that, had it not been for Mr. Williams, a 1938 BL alumnus, The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland would not exist today. Dr. Turner knew and admired Mr. Williams for his dedication to the school and emphasis on scholarly excellence, and initiated the program that would honor Mr. Williams and pay tribute to outstanding students at Boys’ Latin.
College scholars programs such as the Echols Scholars Program at The University of Virginia and the Danforth Scholars Program at the Washington University in St. Louis recognize students who have a proven record of academic achievement and make significant contributions to their communities. Scholars have access to a number of special programs, study abroad opportunities and financial incentives. The Williams Scholars Program at Boys’ Latin will emulate these programs, offering benefits and privileges, while preparing our students for continued success at the college level.
The Williams Scholars Program recognizes Boys’ Latin students for their outstanding academic achievements and proven commitment to the life of the school. The program is both challenging and inclusive, and provides motivation for all Upper and Middle School students to strive for scholarly excellence and service to the community.
