Community, Equity and Inclusion
The Boys' Latin School of Maryland strives to create an inclusive school community serving boys in grades K-12 and to prepare them for the pluralistic society in which we live, work and play.
Reflecting our motto Esse Quam Videri: To Be, Rather Than To Seem, the School fosters an environment in which all members - students, parents and families; faculty, staff and administration; and alumni and friends - feel welcomed and valued for their individual perspective. Boys' Latin values diversity in culture, family configuration, gender, learning style, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status.
Originating from our core values of courage, integrity and compassion, Boys' Latin strives to create a learning environment where the richness of human experience is recognized, respected and embraced.
Boys' Latin is thrilled to welcome Michael Powell. Michael will serve as the School's first director of community, equity and inclusion.Michael has spent most of his career working in independent schools and has extensive experience doing equity and inclusion work. Michael earned his bachelor's degree from Virginia Union University (a Historically Black College and University) with a double major in history and political science, and he received his master's in humanities from Loyola University Maryland. For the past ten years, Michael has worked in a number of independent schools in Connecticut, Maryland and Washington, D.C., where he has taught students in grades four through twelve, coached middle and upper school soccer, tennis and squash, and served as director of equity and inclusion and history department chair at the Institute of Notre Dame in Baltimore.
Michael is delighted to be back in Baltimore and joining the Boys' Latin community. He can't wait to start working with the boys and advancing the important diversity work that is already taking place at BL.
