Mission Statement
The Boys' Latin School of Maryland instills the core values of courage, integrity and compassion in each boy as embodied in our motto, Esse Quam Videri (to be, rather than to seem). By understanding how boys learn best, our talented faculty fosters enduring personal relationships and empowers each student to strive for academic and personal excellence.
Boys' Latin offers a rich and rigorous academic and co-curricular program that prepares young men for the opportunities of the 21st century. The School welcomes students from diverse backgrounds and educates them in a supportive, student-centered environment.
Boys' Latin is accredited by AIMS (Association of Independent Maryland & DC Schools) and a member of NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) and IBSC (International Boys' Schools Coalition).
Diversity Statement
The Boys' Latin School of Maryland strives to create an inclusive school community serving boys in grades K-12 and to prepare them for the pluralistic society in which we live, work and play.
Reflecting our motto Esse Quam Videri: To Be, Rather Than To Seem, the School fosters an environment in which all members - students, parents and families; faculty, staff and administration; and alumni and friends - feel welcomed and valued for their individual perspective. Boys' Latin values diversity in culture, family configuration, gender, learning style, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status.
Originating from our core values of courage, integrity and compassion, Boys' Latin strives to create a learning environment where the richness of human experience is recognized, respected and embraced.
Our Values
Courage, compassion, integrity. Whether you are in the classroom or on a playing field, these values will be at the center of all you do. They are the very heart of our community and shape our lives each and every day.
Courage
Cultivating courage begins with our world-class faculty who model courageous behavior. You will be encouraged to persevere when confronted with challenges and to follow your moral compass in all you do.
Being courageous takes practice. Courage is choosing difficult problems and risking making mistakes. Courage is sharing your thinking with others and appreciating others’ points of view. Courage is taking responsibility for your actions and holding yourself accountable for them. Courage is trying and failing. And trying again. Courage is standing up for what is right and good, even in the face of adversity. Courage is being comfortable with who you are and having the confidence to express your beliefs.
Compassion
Over your years at Boys’ Latin you will develop deep and meaningful relationships with your teachers and your classmates. You will learn that compassion goes far beyond simply showing concern for others. Compassion is feeling deeply for another person and providing help and support whenever and however possible. Your teachers will teach you to consider the circumstances and viewpoints of others, and will help you to improve your ability to tune into their feelings and perspectives.
You will belong to a community that promotes equality in all its forms, and when you graduate you will be prepared to meet life’s challenges with understanding, empathy, and compassion.
Integrity
Developing a boy’s moral character is critical to preparing him for our complex world: a world in which it has become increasingly challenging to discern truth and to act with integrity. You will be taught to uphold the values of our school and to embody our motto, Esse Quam Videri - to be rather than to seem.
You will be held to a high standard of personal conduct to ensure that what you say is what you do. Acting with integrity and honesty is woven into the fabric of the School. You will be challenged to go the extra mile to do what is right rather than what is easy, fostering respect, generating trust, and building a strong sense of responsibility for our community.
