Connected, Engaged and Thriving

reshaping how boys learn

At Boys’ Latin, from kindergarten through twelfth grade, we’re reshaping how our boys learn, play and interact. We’ve launched a comprehensive, School-wide initiative designed to help boys be more present, engaged and connected.

UPPER SCHOOL

We’ve implemented an “away for the day” phone policy: boys turn in their phones each morning and retrieve them at the end of the day. As a result, boys are more connected with each other and fully engaged in
their learning. Boys have gone so far as to say that they’re glad to have the distraction out of their backpacks and pockets.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Our middle school has partnered with The Social Institute to provide lessons in responsible digital citizenship. Through advisory lessons, boys explore the complexities of their social world, both online and offline, and learn to navigate these spaces in a healthy, respectful manner.

LOWER SCHOOL

Our lower schoolers are engaging in unstructured play in our new Creativity Playground, which allows boys to build and explore using materials like tires, crates, and wood, encouraging problem-solving, teamwork and  independence.

SPEND SOME TIME WITH US

AN EVENING WITH AWARD-WINNING JOURNALIST CATHERINE PRICE, AUTHOR OF "HOW TO BREAK UP WITH YOUR PHONE."

Thank you to all who joined us for An Evening with Catherine Price on Tuesday, October 29. Catherine's time with us is only one example of our commitment to doing what is best for boys, evidenced by our "away for the day" phone policy, our new unstructured play space (the Creativity Playground) for lower school boys and a digital citizenship curriculum designed for middle schoolers. Catherine is an award-winning journalist, speaker and author of the best-selling books, How to Break Up With Your Phone and The Power of Fun. She is also the creator of ‘Screen / Life Balance,’ a community and resource hub designed to help us reconnect with and prioritize people and activities that bring meaning and joy.  Catherine partners with Jonathan Haidt, author of The Anxious Generation. She is a thought-leader in this area, and has spoken in front of countless audiences across the country.

UNPACKING THE ANXIOUS GENERATION

On Tuesday, September 12, Boys' Latin parents joined Headmaster Chris Post and members of the administrative team for a conversation and discussion on Jonathan Haidt's book The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness. Haidt argues that the shift from play-based to screen-based childhood, driven by social media and powerful handheld devices, has had devastating consequences for young people.

Headmaster Chris Post spoke about how, using Haidt's research as a guide, we developed plans that strengthen our commitment to live our mission and our values and to do what’s best for our boys. Division heads and counselors shared how this is evident in each division.  Following the speakers, parents broke into small groups by division to discuss the impact of overprotecting children in the real world while under-protecting them online, the role of screens and technology in family life, the value of unstructured play and the differences between growing up today versus in the past. Each group created a poster using a few words or images to reflect their insights — click here to learn more.
