BOYS' LATIN ICE HOCKEY IS ON THE RISE

BOYS' LATIN ICE HOCKEY IS ON THE RISE

Several seasons ago Boys’ Latin’s ice hockey program discontinued participation in MIAA conference play. A number of factors contributed to this decision, including COVID.

However, there was always Butch Maisel. Coach Maisel, who has been part of the program since its beginning. Whose goal of revitalizing the program never wavered. His perseverance and determination kept BL ice hockey alive during those years when there were only eight players on a club team.

Fast forward to the 2021-22 season. A team of young, inexperienced players once again competed in the complete MIAA B Conference schedule. Although their record was 1-10-1, the team played every game with tremendous effort and true Laker pride, and ended the season with renewed hope for this year.

The hopes were high. New varsity coach Baptiste Vernieuwe, assisted by alumni hockey stars Mark Moxley and Derek Radebaugh, led captain and offensive powerhouse Nick Chan, fellow junior and assistant captain Drew Wehberg, and promising freshman Dom Markovich through the season to a 6-5-1 record and a number four seed in the playoffs.

With a supportive and vocal crowd of students, faculty and administrators behind them, BL took the ice against the number one seed, Gilman in the MIAA B Conference semi-finals. The Lakers were up by one goal with 1:38 left in the game, but Gilman fought back, making the final score 8-7 in their favor.

If hopes were high this year, they are even higher for next winter. With the entire team and coaching staff set to return, BL ice hockey can once again be expected to be a strong competitor in the MIAA B Conference. No doubt Coach Maisel will be on the sidelines.
