The Mock Trial team finished the 2025 competition season on a high note with a win over Mergenthaler High School (Mervo). It was the culmination of a busy year for the team: since before Winter Break, they have routinely practiced before and after school.
Mock Trial is a competition in which students simulate a real courtroom trial. Trials are usually held at Baltimore’s Wabash Avenue Courthouse and are presided over by real judges, prosecutors, or defense attorneys. A competitive trial can last anywhere from forty-five minutes to two hours. Both competing teams receive feedback and professional advice from the member of the court serving as "judge" for the meet (usually an actual sitting Maryland judge). The members of the BL Mock Trial Team made steady progress every week, learning not only how to be an effective lawyer or witness but also Maryland case law and courtroom decorum and procedure.
Senior Fritz Fleming led the team as captain, student organizer and peer coach. He and fellow seniors Marvin Harris and Cooper Grabowski participated in every trial this season. Senior Thomas Diaconis chipped for one match as an expert witness. Juniors Asa Bergander and Michael Nwamoh were foundational this year, as were underclassmen Samuel Eisenberg ‘27 and Sameer Roberts ‘28. Samuel and Sameer participated as both lawyers and witnesses this year and figure to be the cornerstones of this program for years to come.
On the faculty side, math teacher Noah Cadet, English teacher Marcia Flaherty and history teacher Eric Whitehair helped to guide, organize and coach the team. Boys’ Latin alumnus Frank Daily also volunteered hours of his time as an attorney coach, helping the boys learn the ins and outs of the legal profession as only a seasoned lawyer can.
