Thank you, Coach Schell!

On Friday night, under the lights of Towson University's Johnny Unitas Stadium, after 22 years at the helm of Boys' Latin's football program, Coach Ritchie Schell coached his final game. And the boys did not disappoint. They brought home a 42-24 victory over arch-rival St. Paul's.

The game was the 69th time the two schools have lined up against each other and the 62nd consecutive game between the rivals.

BL got on the board first on a fourth down 15-yard touchdown pass from Jackson Field '23 to Mason Proutt '24. On the next possession, SP tied it at 7. The Lakers went back on top 14-7 on a 2-yard pass from Field to Tyler Owings '23. SP again answered, making the score, 14-14. BL scored on another Field pass to Owings, this time a 54-yard strike. The extra point was blocked. SP stormed back to score another touchdown and took a 21-20 lead at intermission.

The Crusaders increased their lead to 24-20 on a 32-yard field goal early in the third period. It was all Lakers after that Damon Malloy '23 scored on a 12-yard run and the extra point was a success, when Liam White '24 caught the 2-point conversion pass. On the ensuing possession, SP fumbled the ball, and BL recovered it. Field hit Owings again on a long 52-yard bomb setting up a 2-yard TD run by Malloy. With less than a minute remaining Proutt picked up a fumbled punt and ran it into the end zone for another TD making the final score in favor of the Lakers, 42-24.

Although St. Paul's still leads the series 42-26-1, the record under Coach Schell's leadership was 13-9.

Coach Schell's last game was truly one for the books.  At the end of the game, Coach Schell was surrounded by his team, his family and a stadium full of fans. Boys' Latin is forever grateful for Coach Schell's commitment and dedication to the football program, the boys and the School.  We are thrilled to report that Coach Schell will continue to teach in the upper school and serve as a student advisor.
