About

Every boy is known

Founded in 1844, The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland is an all-boys independent school serving boys in grades K-12. At Boys’ Latin, each and every one of our students is known -- for who he is today, and all he will be tomorrow.

As a purposefully small school, you will develop meaningful relationships that inspire you to see the best within yourself. We fuel intellectual exploration, creating daily opportunities for you to discover new talents and we set ever-higher standards so you can learn, and earn, the results of hard work.

Mission & Diversity Statement

Mission Statement

The Boys' Latin School of Maryland instills the core values of courage, integrity and compassion in each boy as embodied in our motto, Esse Quam Videri (to be, rather than to seem).

By understanding how boys learn best, our talented faculty fosters enduring personal relationships and empowers each student to strive for academic and personal excellence.

Diversity Statement

The Boys' Latin School of Maryland strives to create an inclusive school community serving boys in grades K-12 and to prepare them for the pluralistic society in which we live, work and play.

Reflecting our motto Esse Quam Videri: To Be, Rather Than To Seem, the School fosters an environment in which all members - students, parents and families; faculty, staff and administration; and alumni and friends - feel welcomed and valued for their individual perspective. Boys' Latin values diversity in culture, family configuration, gender, learning style, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status.

Originating from our core values of courage, integrity and compassion, Boys' Latin strives to create a learning environment where the richness of human experience is recognized, respected and embraced.

Schools Place in History

In 1844, Dr. Evert Marsh Topping, a Princeton classics professor, put forth the then-audacious theory that boys learn best when their personal skills and interests are taken into account. One on which we continue to build.

Maryland’s oldest, independent, nonsectarian college preparatory school for boys, Boys’ Latin has grown from a single rented classroom in downtown Baltimore to a beautiful sprawling 70+ acre campus with state-of-the-art facilities, all waiting to be explored. Here, the environment is like no other. You will have room to grow, to see where your academic curiosity takes you and discover talents that you never knew you had. You will thrive. And most valuable of all - you will become part of a family, the Laker family.

Our Lake Avenue Campus

Over 70 acres of rolling countryside provides the perfect setting for boys to learn and grow.

Take a Virtual Tour

Since 1960 Boys’ Latin has called our campus on both sides of Lake Avenue home.

Our buildings house state-of-the-art classrooms and each division has its own library. A black box theater provides space for middle and upper school productions. Tennis courts, a baseball field, two AstroTurf fields, and athletic facilities round out our facilities. In January of 2020 we purchased 28 acres adjacent to our south campus. This property is being transformed into an expansive residential living facility opening its doors to boarding students in the fall of 2021. In addition to the boarding facilities, the new property will provide students with a myriad of outdoor learning opportunities. Boys’ Latin - an exciting place to be, and an exciting time to be here!
