Teaching At BL:
From lacrosse to Pokemon, Mrs. Starkey creates meaningful connections with her students by tapping into their everyday lives and interests. By employing strategic lessons that involve movement, tactiles and visuals, she is able to channel the energy of the boys towards academics in ways that are fun and engaging.
For instance, to practice spelling words, her students plays a game called, "Geronimo." The boys start out by sitting on top of their desks and, after they spell one word correctly, they stand on their desks. When the next word is spelled correctly, they jump off their desks yelling, "Geronimo!"
Mrs. Starkey says she is proud to teach at a school that strives to discover what makes each boy unique and how to adapt teaching methods to help them learn and grow to their fullest potential. "In addition to offering a diverse, rigorous, academic program, Boys' Latin instills the values needed for a student to become a strong citizen in our community. BL pays attention to a student's talents and interests, and wants to make a difference in their lives."
Mrs. Starkey cherishes her community and her faith, volunteering for the local Boy and Girl Scout troops, singing in the church choir, organizing missions and chairing her church's Sunday School program.
Mrs. Starkey passed along the teaching gene to her daughter, who currently teaches math at a Baltimore County High School. Her son, Ben, is a BL alum. The small class sizes and educational support services were perfect for him and allowed him to excel as a student.
Some personal favorites include the television show Big Bang Theory, movies such as White Christmas and Funny Girl and the classic Shel Siverstein book The Giving Tree.
