A personalized approach to college counseling

By Headmaster Chris Post
Headmaster Post recently submitted the following article for publication in Lutherville - Timonium Living. It's worth a read!

I have been fortunate to work in boys' schools for twenty-five years, serving as headmaster of The Boys' Latin School of Maryland since 2008.  Throughout these experiences, I have worked with talented colleagues in mentoring and supporting numerous boys and their families as they navigate the increasingly complex process of college admissions. I have known boys that have gone on to attend a wide array of institutions – from small liberal arts colleges to large research universities, from art schools and music conservatories to our nation’s service academies. And, I have witnessed young men struggle and thrive in the journey to selecting the college of their choice.

Without a doubt, the college selection process can be anxiety-provoking for students and families alike. National headlines certainly don't help. We read about parents manipulating the admissions process; acceptance rates continuing to plummet, and college costs skyrocketing. It's no wonder that parents and students often approach the college process with trepidation. However, it’s meant to be a process of discovery and exploration.
My advice to any parent who is navigating this uncertain landscape is straight-forward: learn all that you can about your child’s interests and the available programs at a given college or university and be excited for your child who is filled with so much promise.

At Boys’ Latin, the college counseling process focuses on helping each boy find his "right fit" school, whether that's an Ivy League institution or a small liberal arts college, a school down the street or one across the country. Our college counselors develop strong relationships with each boy, learning what makes him tick, what he's passionate about, what books he can't put down, and what his favorite (and not so favorite) classes are. The team strives to understand who he is and help him articulate what he hopes to achieve in college and life beyond.

At Boys' Latin, there is no formulaic approach to helping a student choose the college that is right for him. Because of the size of our school, we spend extra time with students, and we begin the process as early as 9th grade. We tailor our program to each boy, working together to determine an individual student's "list" of schools, offering our students a myriad of resources to help them navigate their college journey: parent information nights, student seminars around the transition to college, essay writing workshops, meetings with families and plenty of opportunities for one-on-one counseling sessions. Our goal is for every student to have a variety of appealing, viable options for college, and for each boy to find a school where he will continue to be challenged and happy, to find the school where he will thrive.

This fall, the seventy graduates of the Boys’ Latin Class of 2019 will enter fifty-four different colleges in twenty-three different states. Twenty-eight will attend one of the nation's most competitive colleges*, and six will attend engineering and technology research universities. Sixteen young men will be collegiate athletes, and three will pursue the arts. We’re grateful to have guided them in their individual journeys, and we can’t wait to see what they’ll do next.
