Dear Boys’ Latin Alumni, Parents and Families, Faculty and Staff, and Friends,
As the 2019 – 2020 year draws to a close, we write to you today to share important updates on Boys’ Latin’s on-going efforts to support our community and to fight racism and racial injustice.
We are deeply disturbed by the senseless killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and countless others, and the failures of our society to address and eradicate such injustices. As an educational institution, we are compelled to teach our students the true meaning of an inclusive community, one that embraces racial differences and celebrates diversity.
Our institution values diversity and inclusion as central to our mission. Moments like these are inflection points and should cause us all to stop and deeply reflect on our past and recognize that moving forward, we must ensure that our values are better reflected in our words and in our deeds. We are galvanized in our anti-racist, anti-bias, anti-hate efforts and in our pledge to embrace inclusion, equity and justice. We want to reassure all of our Black alumni, students and families, colleagues and friends that we stand shoulder to shoulder with you.
The Board of Trustees, under the leadership of incoming president Geoffrey Brent ’77, has established The Community, Equity and Inclusion Task Force. Chaired by trustee Dr. Stephen Wright ’69, the task force will work in conjunction with current and past trustees; faculty, staff and administration; alumni and parents and families. They will critically examine our policies and processes to confront any intolerance and implicit bias within our institution. The task force will recommend any needed changes to specific practices and programs, and, working with outside experts, support the School in the implementation of purposeful, professional development for all faculty and staff.
We know how important it is to openly communicate with and listen to our community. We will schedule facilitated discussion groups with our Black alumni and families, along with other People of Color, as we seek to better understand experiences. Recognizing that these discussions are best held in person, we will organize a series of small gatherings, with appropriate social distance and public health precautions. Further details, including RSVP links, will be made available in the week of June 22.
We remain committed to hiring a full-time, administrator as Director of Community, Equity and Inclusion. While we had an active search process through March, the position went unfilled as we contended with the conditions caused by COVID-19. We will begin this process anew, committed to hiring the very best candidate.
These incredibly important steps are designed to lay the foundation for the work ahead. While this work will benefit our entire community, the outcome of our efforts must be for our students to graduate Boys’ Latin valuing diversity and equality, respecting the dignity of all individuals, and denouncing racism, injustice and hatred in all of its forms.
The motto of our School, Esse Quam Videri: To Be Rather than to Seem, compels all of us to live out our values and ensure that all are treated equally, with dignity and with respect. Now, more than ever, we are committed to this work and to taking action. We will continue to update you on our progress and future initiatives.
