COPPA Policy

Internet Safety and COPPA

Boys’ Latin uses several software applications and web-based services which are hosted in the cloud provided by third-party vendors.  These applications and services offer many educational advantages including flexibility for teachers to select the best resources to complement their curriculum, a wide range of Internet-based solutions and tools that can be quickly accessed anytime and anywhere, and increased opportunities for sharing, collaboration, and interactive learning.
In accordance with federal regulations included in the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), parental approval is required for Boys’ Latin to continue to provide your son with the most effective web-based tools and applications for learning.
For our students to use these programs and services, certain personally identifying information, including the student’s name and email address, must be provided to the website operator.  Students will be able to maintain individual and personalized online access and files by providing this information to these operators.  Importantly, Boys’ Latin only chooses to partner with service providers that do not share personal identifying information.  Under federal law, these websites must provide parental notification and obtain parental consent before collecting personal information from children under the age of 13.  The law permits schools such as Boys’ Latin to consent to the collection of personal information on behalf of all of its students, thereby eliminating the need for individual parental consent given directly to the website operator.
Boys’ Latin remains committed to protecting the privacy of our students and has established practices to do so.  We will exercise caution in choosing third party services and will rigorously review each vendor’s privacy policy. Boys'  Latin does not collect any more information from the students than is necessary to permit them to successfully access online content. Boys’ Latin will continue to address Internet safety and privacy rights with students during the year.  Furthermore, Boys’ Latin will hold information sessions for parents about Internet safety and privacy rights early in the school year.  We also encourage parents to educate their children about Internet safety and privacy.  Useful tools can be found here:

These applications and services listed herein may require users to register. When registering, the operators of some applications or services may collect a user’s name and/or email address. Under federal law, these operators may be required to provide parental notification and obtain parental consent before collecting personal information from children under the age of 13.
