Teaching At BL:Ms. DeVries loves the energy and enthusiasm of first graders. She says,"Each day, they are excited about learning. Seeing the light bulb go off when they discover something new is my reward." For Ms. DeVries, teaching is all about making authentic connections for the students in her class--to what they're learning, to one another, and to her, as their teacher.
As she says, "Boys are naturally curious and want to know why they are learning something." So, through engaging, hands-on lessons, Ms. DeVries makes those connections as concrete and real as possible for her first graders.
But that's not all. She also makes a concerted effort to make her classroom a place where all her students are comfortable sharing their opinions, even their confusion as they learn. She believes her young students build their confidence through well-structured challenges that bring out their personal best.
Her favorite thing about BL?
Community. "I love how the boys develop lifelong bonds as brothers." She also takes very seriously her own role as a teacher at the school in nurturing in all Lakers the school's core values of courage, integrity, and compassion in each boy. "I love how we present so many opportunities for our boys to realize their full potential, characteristics that extend far beyond their years on Lake Avenue."
