Teaching At BL:
Everyone who knows her agrees: Ms. Brown is exactly the kind of person you want teaching science to your sixth-grader. Where you might get some disagreement is on what makes her so exceptional. Some will cite the love of science and learning she so clearly embodies, along with her ability to make this love contagious. Others will cite her passion for community service and dedication to making it a habitual part of all her students' lives. Still others see the sheer joy of teaching she clearly has trouble hiding.
"After 25 years at Boys' Latin, I still love being here every day," she said recently. "I love the challenge of learning something new--there's always something new to learn in science--and then figuring out the best way of teaching it, and making it real for my students. We are a lifelong community of people who are eager to try something new. Whenever I come up with a new idea or approach, I always receive nothing but encouragement."
It's exactly this kind of spirit that makes Ms. Brown such a beloved part of the Boys' Latin community. And on that, everyone can agree.
Ms. Brown is deeply committed to serving both her community and her church, participating regularly in mission work and traveling the country to help to respond to natural disasters.
"I love the children's book Harold and the Purple Crayon. The central message has always spoken to me: whatever we most want in life is within our power to create."
A Baltimore resident, Ms. Brown loves traveling, reading, camping and, in quieter moments, doing needlework.
