Teaching At BL:
"I tell my students that they are capable of doing everything I put in front of them, but it will challenge them. How else are they to become better readers, writers, and thinkers?" Mrs. Fenstermaker asks rhetorically.

She believes in "tough love," letting her students know that they may not like everything they're asked to do, but in the end, "they recognize it's because I'm pushing them to be the best they can be in my classes."

"It is not important to me if my students remember the protagonist of a novel 10 years down the road," Mrs. Fenstermaker says. "What is important is that they recognize the analytical and critical thinking and writing skills they've gained while we've studied these texts, and that these skills can be applied to multiple content areas and the 'real world' they will soon experience."

Mrs. Fenstermaker enjoys the classroom conversations that come from demanding material and texts. "To talk about a novel, character, or modern impact of a story with my students is thrilling to me."

When she talks about the sense of community at BL, she feels it's a genuine sense of care that binds everyone together. "We truly want to see our students succeed and we make this happen by supporting each other."

What's More:
Though not a native "Baltimorean," Mrs. Fenstermaker and her husband, Adam, have made the area their home. Outside of BL, she enjoys doing community service and teaching power skating. She also loves reading, cooking, and exercising.

Her favorite movies are It's a Wonderful Life and You've Got Mail and her favorite book is The Great Gatsby.
