Teaching At BL:
"For Mr. Freihofer, learning should be both enjoyable and rigorous, challenging yet affirming, mystifying yet clarifying. "I've learned that a student-centric approach in the classroom--one characterized by respect, optimism, trust, fun, energy, equity, focus, and personal responsibility--typically works because these are the qualities that our young men value and seek to cultivate in their own lives."

Mr. Freihofer enjoys fostering a love of reading and writing because it represents the opportunity to impart an enormously valuable life skill, one that will enrich and expand lifelong capabilities in virtually every next level of growth. A world that is increasingly stressing the importance and marketability of vocational skills will always need the critical and analytical thinker, the fluent and empathetic communicator, the courageous and hungry creator. He asks, "What's not to like about being in the middle of that?"

About BL, he admires, "How the school cultivates a sweet and stimulating spot between relentless academic rigor and the patient nurturing of academic capability. The caring and commitment of our faculty enable pathways to be created and connections to be established with our students that transcend the content of the curriculum even while they complement it. BL is small enough to tend to the details and the individual nuances that lead to individual success and yet is large enough to offer the complexity, diversity, and life-lessons of 'community.'"

What's More:
Mr. Freihofer has two adult children, Matt and Dr. Katie Lewis, who make him proud "more because of their hearts than for their many accomplishments." Among other things, Mr. Freihofer enjoys writing, sailing, rowing, and taking care of stray dogs.
