ABOUT BOYS' LATIN

A HISTORY OF PREPARING BOYS FOR THE FUTURE

For more than 170 years, Lakers have embodied our Latin motto. For each of us, that means pushing beyond what seems sufficient to others. Instead, we seek true excellence in ways measured by deeper insights, extra steps, harder decisions and, ultimately, greater impact.

Welcome from Headmaster, Chris Post

On behalf of our entire community, welcome to Boys' Latin.

As Maryland's oldest, independent and nonsectarian, college preparatory school for boys, Boys' Latin was founded on the belief in our motto Esse Quam Videri (To Be, Rather Than To Seem). More than 170 years later, each one of us - administrators, teachers, coaches and students - continues to strive for and expect this TRUE EXCELLENCE from one another, each and every day.

Our collective success in this school-defining enterprise is evident in the corps of great men of character and talent who call themselves Lakers. Their life achievements have helped advance virtually every field and industry. One pioneered the use of penicillin. Another established one of our nation's most successful financial institutions. A recent graduate interned with NASA and is developing robotic devices while another is determined to reinvent the hospitality industry. All are remarkable. All started here.

I am humbled by the opportunity to lead such an extraordinary school, a peerless faculty that embodies the joy of teaching, and a student body full to the brim with distinctive talents and boundless possibilities.

At Boys' Latin, we prepare our students to thrive in and help shape the future. But in doing so, we also help our boys build the lifelong bonds of brotherhood that will always set us apart.

I encourage you to visit and get to know more about this remarkable institution, and explore all the reasons why it just may be the right school for your son.

All the best,

CHRISTOPHER J. POST

Hands-on experience and real-word applications make learning come to life for our boys.

School's Place in History

In 1844, Dr. Evert Marsh Topping, a Princeton classics professor, put forth the then - audacious theory that boys learn best when their personal skills and interests are taken into account. From that core philosophy, an incredible legacy was founded - one that we continue to build upon today.

Maryland's oldest, independent, nonsectarian college preparatory school for boys, Boys' Latin has transformed from a single classroom rented in downtown Baltimore into a beautiful campus in Roland Park replete with state-of-the-art facilities and large athletic fields. Since 1960, we've grown from serving fewer than 200 boys to more than 600 in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Much more vital than the changes in our facilities and student body is the national leadership role Boys' Latin assumes among independent schools. We have set standards in such things as student academic self-confidence and emotional well-being, a model peer culture, and excellence in faculty support.

Throughout our history, we have always known that our students come to our school with distinctive talents and differences in learning styles. We've always worked tirelessly to ensure developmentally-appropriate, culturally-attuned and individually-tailored learning experiences for every boy since our beginnings - more than 170 years ago.

Boys' Latin offers an environment like no other. Here, there is no one-size-fits-all program. Our students thrive in an environment where they have room to see where their academic curiosity takes them, flex their creative muscles, and discover talents they never suspected they even had.

But perhaps what our boys value most of all: they become part of a unique lifelong brotherhood, exclusive in all the best senses of the word.

Diversity Statement

Adopted by the Board of Trustees, September 2015

The Boys' Latin School of Maryland strives to create an inclusive school community serving boys in grades K-12, and preparing them for the pluralistic society in which we live, work and play.

Reflecting our motto Esse Quam Videri: To Be, Rather Than To Seem, the School fosters an environment in which all members - students, parents and families; faculty, staff and administration; and alumni and friends - feel welcomed and valued for their individual perspective. Boys' Latin values diversity in culture, family configuration, gender, learning style, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status.

Originating from our core values of courage, integrity and compassion, Boys' Latin strives to create a learning environment where the richness of human experience is recognized, respected and embraced.

Our Lake Avenue Campus

Originally established in downtown Baltimore, Boys' Latin has called our beautiful 41-acre Lake Avenue campus in Roland Park home since 1960.

Ten buildings feature state-of-the-art classrooms, a library per division, dedicated fine arts and performing arts centers and athletic facilities. There are also five tennis courts, two all-purpose AstroTruf® fields, one baseball field, and a stadium that has served as our own field of dreams for generations of Lakers.

New for the 2015 academic year is our Student Commons. It is the steel and glass expression of the kind of community we build here at Boys' Latin, one based on shared experiences and high expectations. The Student Commons brings together our three divisions and can seat every student per division for lunch. The community comes together for meals, for conversation and for assemblies - all furthering our ideal of forging one Boys' Latin, and brothers for life.
